The Allure of the Crossword Puzzle

Crossword puzzles keep the brain sharp. Nearly every elderly person in my life has seen fit to inform me of this fact. Well, today I started thinking, and I couldn’t stop thinking, about the endless crossword opportunities.

A crossword puzzle could have a Lord of the Rings theme. It could have any theme. Imagine if one were titled “Top 10 Dating Websites of 2003”. That would be kind of tricky for anyone who wasn’t single in 2003 exploring every possible avenue for their next date.

Crossword puzzles can be shaped various ways. The words could be randomly attached to each other, or they could form a circle, or they could form a perfect square. The boxes themselves could be shaped like diamonds or ovals. The frame color could be forest green or alternating rainbow colors.

Combining the idea of a theme and customization is super neat. Say you you wanted to make a household item themed crossword puzzle book. The first puzzle is titled “Stairs Galore.” Some prompts would be: Across, 1. average number of steps inside a house; Down, 10. material used to create most outside stairs. The puzzle would literally be shaped like steps. Would a book like that interest you? I would definitely use that book to kill time in an airport.

Imagine a shelf shaped like a simple crossword puzzle…There would be just empty blocks adjacent to each other that books or knickknacks could be placed in. Although, people might confuse it with a Scrabble shelf.

Just an exercise in imagination. Good to keep that dementia at bay.
